Paperdoll Extra

In the last post I forgot to add another thing I worked on for the video. It's just a line of sea creatures used repeatedly for a crowd scene.

Also, here's some minor edits I made to the Teresa Fish(Band Vocalist). I've got some other stuff to post today, but those might come a little later. Check back in the evening, or early morning depending on how long my day is.

Alllllso, I can't remember if I posted this already and I'm too lazy too check. Here's another character that wound up on the cutting room floor. Hakaider Shark!!!

Punks, Rastas, and Disco Anglers!

First up in our little aquatic adventure is the Blade Runner Replicant Fish. This unfortunate creature was "retired" before making the final cut.

Next up is the Hot Topic blow fish. Unlike the previous fish, this little guy will be appearing in the music video. His final incarnation is in the first image at the lower right-hand corner.

Back fresh from the 80's is the Punk Fish whose final form can be seen in the center of the 2nd image.

Ah, the mellow Rastapus. His final design is the iamge in the top right-hand corner of the 3rd page. I personally think the one one the left-hand side was a little more fun.

Oh, one of the band members has arrived! It's Seahorse Patrick, the guitarist.

Appearing next is Jack Fish, the bass player. For this guy I worked off a preexisting design (seen at the top left) and edited it a bit. I also got to animate this one. For compositing purposes, I had to put blank space at the end of the animation.

These are all in Flash btw. I'd take a good ol' paper and pencil anyday, but whatever.

Slap dat bass hard!!!

Back from Scarborough Fair is the groovy 60's Cuttlefish. Her animation had to be rushed a little to meet a deadline.

As we descend deeper into ocean, we at last reach the bottom. Here we find some of the more
"interesting' creatures. Finally venturing out of his den of despair is the Emo Eel. Can the sun ever shine in the murky depths? Can a heavy soul ever escape the grasp of the abyss?

The Idle animation is the only one that I didn't clean-up and color.

Our final entcounter is with the Disco Angerfish. Upon further study, the Disco Angler appears to bare a strong resempance to Gunther.

He's got that creepy 70's porn star vibe to 'em.

Oooooo, you touch my twa la la!

And so end the first of a long line of postings.

Tune in next week. Same Bat-time. Same Bat-channel.

Back from a long absence

My, my. It has been a while hasn't it.

Well, I've returned and this time with a definitive schedule. Since work keeps me working pretty long hours during the week, I've decided to start doing weekend posts. Every Saturday sounds pretty good. I'll be posting some of the stuff I've been doing at work (the stuff I CAN show). In addition I'm committing myself to working on some personal projects that have been in the queue for a while now. Most of these are series' of concept work that I've been wanting to do, but there's still the matter of that lip-synch animation I mentioned in the last post. I'd have to use the cintiq at the office If I wanted to get that started.

There's also a post I've been working on has to do with some common themes I've noticed here and there regarding "A hero's journey". Often times I see stories in which a protagonist must face a rival, face himself, face his antithesis, and finally face his ultimate nemesis. There're also the matter of color association. The hero is usually blue, the rival red, and the antithesis black. I talk about this in depth later.

As usual the posts are gonna be pretty broad: works stuff, personal stuff, casual sketches, or just a topic I feel like addressing. The first the thing I'm putting up are some of the work I did for the Paperdoll music video. We at Anthem Groups have been working on that for awhile, but other projects have sucked up a lot of time. All that's really left to do is compositing and as soon as thats done, the video will be online.

Here's a link to Paperdoll's website just for a frame of reference.

On the project, I was an animater and lead character desginer.

The music video is aquatic-themed with all the band members being represented as fish. There's also a lot of fun archtypes in the video, which you'll see shortly.

Black, Blue, and Red all over.

Well it's been quite some time since I last posted, but now I'm back in the saddle. I've had a lot of post material that's been gestating for a while. It is now time to give birth. Come and behold my mutant children!

The image above is some artwork for a music video that's been put on hiatus. It's a Hakaider shark. I case you don't know who Hikaider is, I'll get to that further in the post. I decided to put it up not only to maintain the flow of art on this blog, but also because it's relevant to the post.

For one reason or another, I recently found myself rediscovering the old Mega Man games for NES. Amid playing the games and reading up on them on that ol' (may or maynot be full of crap public) encyclopedia, Wikipedia, I noticed a few things that reminded me of the Sonic games.

Both games have a blue hero whose rival is red and arch nemesis/antithesis is black. They also feature a mad scientist as the main villain. The mad scientist commonality is more incidental in regard to my point, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.

The key here is that many works of fiction seem to follow a pattern in terms of character relationship. The most always must face his "perceived enemy", face his/herself, and finally face thier true enemy. In the case of Mega Man, Sonic the Hedghog, Kikaider, and to a lesser extent Street Fighter, color usage also seems to play a big role. And yes, I'm aware that the aforementained works of fiction are either video games or animated series.

The Rival: Perceived Enemy

Protagonists/Heroes, in most cases a warrior of some sort, often encounter someone who walks a similar road as they do, but whose methods or ideology differ. They challenge the protagonist, counter them, and force him/her to become stronger. The rival may initially be seen as an opposing force to stand in the hero's way. This is often the case, but a true rival will ultimately accelerate the hero's progress.

The rival's characteristics tend to be similar to that of the hero, yet different enough to emphasize their alternative nature. The use of opposing colors such as blue and red pushes this tension even further. They're both primary colors and because of which they clash. It's interesting to note that in Japanese culture blue is associated with good and red with evil. This fact is much more relevant to Kikaider, but I'll get to that.

Heh, as I'm writing this, I can't help but think about Coke and Pepsi!

First up lets start with Mega Man and his rival Proto Man. I'd like to bring up Mega Man X and Zero, but I don't quite feel like delving into the storyline of the Mega Man X games.

I tried to summarizing backstories for these characters, but I decided to just post the link to the wikipedia entry. I don't think I could properly get my points across without you knowing certain details of the story. Just scroll down to the fictional history section.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mega_Man_(character)

Assuming you read that (or at least skimmed it), you'll note that Mega Man and his "brother"Proto Man where created for roughly the same purpose, to serve and aid mankind. Mega Man accepted Dr. Light's dream of robots cooperating with humans to better the world, but Proto Man wanted nothing more than independence. Unlike Mega Man, who was created with a companion, Proto Man came into the world alone and thus had no concept of coodependance.

Status Update

As of now, I have officially begun work as a full-time employee at Anthem Design Group. I'm actually writing this at work right now. It's the first day, so not much is going on. My apartment is also fully set up (sans a couch).

I don't know when exactly Inkased will go in sale, but as soon as it does, I'll post the roughs from my Aztec comic. As usual, I actually like most aspects of the roughs better than the final product.

I'm planning to do some lip-synch animation on my own time. I came across some (English) Dragonball voice samples of Emperor Pilaf and Shao. I also have the English and Japanese voice collections from Dragonball GT: Final Bout. I don't know exactly which I want to do yet. I'll post any sketches here.

And BTW, The Dark Knight was indeed a pretty good movie.

Hancock, Halfcocked?

I saw Hancock today and I have to say that it wasn't the piece of crap that I thought it would be

At long Last! A new post!

I've been in the process of renting an apartment, so I been preoccupied lately. I've signed the lease and everything, so by July 11th I should be moved in. Once that happens productivity should shoot up. I'll finally be alone to spent as much ungodly time on my personal projects as I want. That is, of course whenever I'm not working. By July 15th I'll be starting my full-time job as production artist at Anthem Design Group. So far I've only been contracting for them (sprite work, animating, low-poly modeling, and a little illustrating). I'll be doing more of the same, plus learning a little programing.

Now, without further ado, here's that revised 1st page of that Aztec comic I promised. I'll be letting you know whenever the anthology book is available.
